Welcome to the Oak Creek Garden Beds!

Kerstan Ruffer and Megan Gabriel-Hastings

Leaders/Developers of the OCE Garden Beds

In the Spring of 2016, Oak Creek Elementary School partnered with Home Depot to build eighteen beautiful and bountiful garden beds for our school.  After awarding a small grant to OCE, Home Depot supplied all of the materials at no charge.  Some Home Depot employees and many Oak Creek volunteers worked hard for several days to build these garden beds.  Teachers, students, and parents have been very involved with maintaining and harvesting the garden bed ever since.

Classrooms visit the garden beds for planting and learning. Oak Creek has partnered with IDC to fund a part-time staff member to teach gardening lessons to the students.

In addition to the gardening lessons, we have held some delicious Harvest Parties!  This fall we made salsa, salad, and pesto using ingredients grown in our garden beds.  In November we had a salad party.  The children harvested  and then partook of salads made with kale, lettuce, spinach, and tomatoes.

We look forward to many more years of OCE students taking learning outside the classroom and into the garden beds!
